TED MATTOX FOR MAYOR
Councilman At Large Ted Mattox has been a fresh face in Montclair’s town administration and a strong voice for the needs and concerns of residents for the past four years. Ted is excited to continue serving the residents of Montclair by focusing on fiscal responsibility and accountability, excellence in education, land-use and environmental issues. His vision and experience in public advocacy, publishing, communications and business development has already served Montclair’s Planning Board, Board of School Estimate, Parks and Recreation Committee and Communications Committee. Ted also serves on the Legislative Committee of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities. His familiarity with state legislators from across the state, as well as his keen knowledge of the political process in Trenton will allow him to keep Montclair’s needs on the top of state legislators’ minds.
Ted’s contributions to Montclair extend well beyond the political arena and into the community. He is a co-founder of Montclair Watch, a municipal government watchdog group in Montclair that ensures prudent fi scal spending and fair and equal treatment of all residents. He has donated his professional services by co-designing and installing a state-of-the-art broadcast facility in one of Montclair’s public schools, and launched his own grassroots initiative, dubbed Montclair Computer Connection, to place refurbished computers in the homes of families in Montclair who could not have otherwise afforded one. He has also coached kids’ tennis through the Police Athletic League (PAL) and Kinderkickers soccer with Montclair’s United Soccer Club.
Professionally, Ted has been an innovative leader in the marketing, communications and Internet industries for more than 18 years. His creative style, straightforward approach and out-of-the-box thinking have helped launch a wide range of successful business ventures. He is currently the General Manager of Black Forest Multimedia, a boutique marketing and business development fi rm specializing in developing media properties and marketing consulting. Ted was previously Director of Multimedia Publishing and New Business Development for Consumers Union, the not-for-profi t publisher of Consumer Reports Magazine. At Consumers Union, he expanded the magazine’s strategic alliances with major media and commercial outlets, negotiating multi-million dollar business deals with such clients as Yahoo!, America Online and MSN. Ted shares the organization’s mission of providing unbiased testing and information to protect consumers from unsafe and/or unproductive consumer products.
Ted is a former executive producer of CBS.com, where he is credited with launching the network’s website and increasing on air programming viewership. He was also a senior marketing executive for the NBC Television Network where he managed the network’s highly acclaimed “Must See TV” promotional campaign.
At NBC, Ted created one of the largest Internet events to date, bringing together artists and entertainers from Quincy Jones to Toni Braxton for a month of daily Internet chat sessions. Prior to joining the media industry, he worked with Sony Corporation of North America in its Business and Professional Products Group.
Ted is the recipient of numerous professional and community awards, including the New Media Invision award, the Harlem YMCA Man of the Year award, and the Sony Star Power award. His diverse community involvement includes longtime support of the United Negro College Fund, work with Dr. Dorothy Height and the National Council of Negro Women, raising funds and securing donations for Hale House in New York and earning recognition for being a Partner in Education with the New York City public schools.
Ted and his wife Kuae have three children, one in preschool and two in the Montclair Public Schools. Kuae is a contributing editor for Plum Magazine and National Director of Media and Publicity for Mocha Moms, Inc., a national non-profi t support group for at-home mothers of color. Ted is an active and involved parent in his children’s education and in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, such as swimming, soccer, karate, dance, acting, drum and voice class.
Ted is a native of Pemberton, New Jersey and holds a B.A. in communications from Temple University.
